LOLG Victory in Defamation Lawsuit against Hate Speech
Overview
Jonathan Lisus, Paul Fruitman and Khrystina McMillan represent Paramount Fine Foods and its CEO, Mohamad Fakih, in a defamation lawsuit against anti-Muslim agitators. On December 7, 2018, Paramount settled with one of the defendants, Ranendra “Ron” Banerjee. As part of the settlement, Mr. Banerjee issued a public apology in which he stated that his hateful comments were “defamatory and disparaging” and “entirely without merit”. In his apology, Mr. Banerjee also stated that “I have learned that it was wrong to attack Mr. Fakih because of his religion or where he is from. Such hate has no place in Canada, and I will not make public comments of this nature in the future. I hope everyone seeing or reading this apology learns from my mistake.” Under the terms of the settlement agreement negotiated by LOLG, Mr. Banerjee also consented to a $100,000 Judgment against him for any similar comments he makes in the future against Paramount Fine Foods, Mr. Fakih, their business associates, or Mr. Fakih’s family.
